Editing Site Content

  1. You will submit your content to Expression Engine in two primary ways. The first is a simple text field in which you may enter unformatted text such as numbers, names, or short descriptions. You will not have the ability to change the appearance of the text entered in these fields.

  2. The second is a more elaborate content entry field referred to as a "what-you-see is-what-you-get" (WYSIWYG) editor. Here, you can apply styles such as bold and italics, create tables and lists, and embed images. The styles may differ depending on how each individual site is set up. The way the content appears in this content editor is largely how the content will appear on the actual page.

  3. Expression Engine may remove text styles from text copied into WYSIWYG fields from Microsoft Word or other word processors, and you should plan on reformatting it once its been entered into Expression Engine. We recommend using the eraser tool to remove any stray formatting from text copied from Microsoft word.

  1. Highlight the text you wish to link to another page on the site. Click on the 'Create Link' icon.

  2. Select 'Structure Pages' under the link type.

  3. Select the page you wish to link from the structure pages dropdown menu.

  1. You can access and edit most site pages through Structure. Clicking on the name of the page brings up all the editable fields related to the selected page. Here, you can edit most content that appears on the page.

  2. Click 'Submit' when you have completed the page modifications. Your changes will shortly be reflected on the live site. If you change your mind about any changes before clicking 'Submit', simply navigating away from the page will revert to the original content.

  1. Some content on your site may exist outside of the main site navigation. These may include news articles, directory entries, or homepage features. You can access this content through Structure Assets. Go to Structure to find your sites structure assets.

  2. Click on the link labeled 'Assets.' This link will only be visible if your site contains Structure assets.

  3. This brings you to a page containing the different Structure assets that make up your site. Clicking the 'Add' link will allow you to create a new instance of the structure asset to add to your site. Clicking the 'Edit' link will load a list of all of the content type that has been created.

  4. Some structure assets may only appear once on the site (such as the site's homepage). You can edit these structure assets by clicking on the asset name, but you won't be able to add more instance of the structure asset.

  1. Many pages may have fields for adding meta descriptions, which provide a brief description of the page in search engine results. Including a meta description may make it easier for visitors to find the page through a search engine.

  2. Click on the page title in Structure to edit the page

  3. Click on the tab labeled "NSM Better Meta"

  4. Enter a description of the page in the field labeled 'Description.' Keep the description under 150 characters. You can check the character counter to see how many characters you've used.

  1. If you need to remove a page from the site, consider hiding the page from the main navigation. You can always restore the page later, and users will only be able to find the content through the site search functionality. You can also permanently delete the page, though its much more difficult to restore the page.

  2. Mouse over the name of the page in Structure. Click on the button labeled 'Delete'
