Glossary

  • The part of your site where you log into expression engine to manage your content.


  • A page that is nested under another page in site navigation. Also called a Subpage


  • Your username that you use to log into many campus services.
  • A content management system that lets you maintain and edit the text, images, and files that make up your site.


  • Any files uploaded to the site (including PDFs, images, and word docs). They can be managed through the Assets tool.


  • The top-most page that exists on the site that site visitors see when they visit {Your Site}.uchicago.edu.


  • Higher level page that lead to or contain similarly grouped pages. Users must 'land' on this page before viewing more specific content. Specific Landing Pages usually have unique layouts and content and are created only once.


  • The site available to the public when they visit the URL.


  • The Expression Engine term for users who have access to the site.


  • A brief description of the page content that shows up in search results.


  • The part of the site that enables visitors to move to different pages on the site. The navigation usually appears at the top of the page (the top level navigation) and on the left side of the page (the left navigation), though individual sites may be designed differently. The navigation in managed in Structure.


  • An individual page on your website that has a unique URL and often appears on the navigation bar


  • he title of the page that appears at the top of browser window, tab, or search results.


  • A page that has a Child Page listed under it in the site navigation.


  • An Expression Engine tool that allows you to manage the order and hierarchy of pages on the site.


  • Content on the site that is not part of the site navigation (or managed through Structure).


  • A page that is nested under another page in site navigation. Also called a Child Page.


  • The virtual private network - allows you to connect to the internet from anywhere as if you were on campus. IT Services has instructions for setting up a VPN.


  • Stands for 'What You See Is What You Get,' indicating that styling that appears in the editor will appear on the page. Allows you to customize what your text looks like within the constraints of the site.
